Teacher of the Deaf:

Tucker Maxon School is looking for a fulltime teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing to start the last week of August 2018. The position is likely to be in the preschool division where there are 3-4 classes. This is your opportunity to become part of an amazing and dedicated team. This is a fulltime, exempt position reporting to the school Principal. Tucker Maxon is one of only 4 schools in the nation to meet or exceed the OPTION Schools Standards of Excellence in Listening and Spoken Language Education. Our independent, nonprofit school currently has 100 students and 30 dedicated staff. Start date is Aug. 27th.

Job Description:

  • Teach a preschool class of less than 14 students with a fulltime Educational Asst.
  • Create positive, well-organized and orderly learning environment where children feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Demonstrate unconditional respect for children and their well-being without regard to race, religion, socioeconomic, gender and physical limitations.
  • Integrate needs related to deafness into a well-balanced classroom.
  • Promotes interaction and learning among peers.
  • Provide an appropriate example for students with personal conduct.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, fellow teachers, non-teaching personnel, and administration through excellent communication.
  • Actively support the nonprofit mission of the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with specialization in Listening and Spoken Language (LSLS certification preferred).
  • Certification by the Oregon State Department of Education or eligible.
  • Oregon Teachers License or eligible.
  • Minimum 2 years of equivalent experience in working with students who use hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices to access spoken language.
  • An interest or background in social and emotional learning (SEL).

Preschool Teacher:

Job Description:

  • Teach a preschool class of less than 15 students with a fulltime Educational Asst.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a 7-person preschool team.
  • Create positive, well-organized and orderly learning environment where children feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Prepare developmentally appropriate lesson plans within a play-based preschool.
  • Demonstrate unconditional respect for children and their well-being without regard to race, religion, socioeconomic, gender and physical limitations.
  • Integrate needs related to deafness into a well-balanced classroom.
  • Focus on both hearing and deaf children, and address the “whole child”.
  • Accommodate differing language levels, auditory skill levels, behavioral needs and/or learning styles within the classroom.
  • Promotes interaction and learning among peers.
  • Provide an appropriate example for students with personal conduct.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, fellow teachers, non-teaching personnel, and administration through excellent communication.
  • Actively support the nonprofit mission of the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Early Childhood Education and Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certification by the Oregon State Department of Education (Dual Certification for Early Childhood and Elementary Education preferred).
  • Oregon Teachers License
  • Minimum 2 years of equivalent experience.
  • Proven track record of teaching success.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Someone who looks for solutions not problems.
  • An interest or background in social and emotional learning (SEL).
  • You must have a Criminal Registry Number, or apply for and be granted a Criminal Registry Number.
  • Ability to listen, talk and lift up to 20-30 pounds.
  • Sense of humor.

Teachers are required to be present on campus for 8 hours per day 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all school and work days with some flexibility.

Lead and Assistant Aftercare Teachers

Tucker Maxon School is taking applications for part-time Lead and Assistant Aftercare Teachers for Preschool and Elementary children for the 2018-19 school year. We are seeking applicants who love to work and play with children of all ages. Whether it is a basketball game on the playground or arts and crafts in a classroom, applicants need to be willing to jump right in and engage the kids in fun, safe activities.

Skills Required and/or Preferred:

  • Required: Enrolled status in Oregon Central Background Registry which includes a background check with fingerprinting.
  • Must be completed upon offer of employment: Abide by State of Oregon regulations for Childcare Certification including holding of current Food Handler’s card and Infant and Child First Aid/CPR card and “Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse” certification.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty and staff.
  • Good communication skills, including email.
  • Reliable, punctual, well-organized and efficient.
  • Preferred: One year teaching with Preschool or Elementary in a Before/After Care setting or equivalent Early Childhood education.

Compensation: This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a pay rate of $12.50/hour.

The work hours vary Monday through Friday between 12:00-5:30 pm dependent on aftercare attendance, plus time for meetings, as well as attendance at school in-service as requested. The position follows the school year, starting in September and ending when school is out in June.
