James (Jim) Kean is a senior technology executive with an innovative career focused on developing disruptive consumer-oriented fitness, health, and wellness experiences. The consistent theme: creating user delight, loyalty and retention while fundamentally re-engineering the cost of delivery. He presently runs a consulting practice – Design Think + Launch – focused on rapidly growing technology and service delivery companies.
Jim is Founder and former CEO of WellnessFx™ a venture backed San Francisco based company that is making it easy and affordable for consumers to manage key areas of their healthcare lives by providing “smart” Cloud based Health Accounts that allow consumers to take control of their healthcare lives. In December 2013 the company merged with Health Elements/Thorne Research in a private transaction. After WellnessFX, he was brought in to drive the design of an innovative new fitness-based sports league on NBC Sports. The Grid League featured two coed teams engaged in two hours of fitness races. While there, Jim produced nine TV shows that generated high ratings and social audiences of 3.3 million followers. In 1995, Jim founded Sapient Health Network (SHN) which became the Consumer facing business of WebMD. As President of SHN, Jim pioneered the concept of online consumer health communities, building some of the largest and most loyal groups on the Web today.
Jim is a former Board Member of Portland Center Stage (PCS) – a highly regarded regional theatre. During his tenure as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee, PCS achieved recognition for developing and opening the first Platinum LEED performing arts building. An avid outdoorsman, in 1999 he hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Graduated 1984 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR; MBA from Tuck School at Dartmouth in 1991. He enjoys the great outdoors and winter sports with his wife and three children. One of his children currently attends Tucker Maxon School.
