René DerasFractional Head of Finance

Rene brings 30 years of accounting experience, including two decades focused in the non-profit sector. He is a Certified Public Accountant and currently work as the Controller at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as providing fractional CFO services.

Rene started his career in Texas working for small businesses for around 5 years and then moved into the Real Estate sector for 7 years. He moved to Oregon in 2004 and landed on the central coast in Toledo, Oregon, working for the Siletz Tribe in Lincoln City in their Economic Development Office as the controller, helping to find additional revenue sources other than the Casino in order to sustain the tribe if the Casino were to stop existing. He then moved to Portland in 2007 and worked for 11 years as the Director of Accounting at Albertina Kerr Centers, Oregon’s largest provider of services to adults and children with intellectual/developmental disabilities and children in mental health crisis and those needing mental health services. In 2018, Rene was hired as the Controller for the Portland Art Museum and played a critical role in helping to maintain and sustain the museum through the pandemic. He played a significant role in helping to bring about the renovations at the Portland Art Museum and its capital campaign. He left shortly after the construction started and moved back to Texas and started working for the Kimbell Art Museum as the controller.

He has managed all aspects of accounting, finance, HR, Payroll, strategic planning, negotiations with insurance companies, several mergers with other non-profits, various software implementations, and leading various teams successfully. Several times, he has gone into an organization in upheaval and transition and created processes and procedures to bring the finances into order. Rene a firm believer in non-profit organizations that are providing services that are greatly needed in our society, from I/DD service, mental services, arts and culture, and many others. He firmly believes these organizations are important in any society and require the best financial stewardship that can be provided.

Rene holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Texas Tech University and a Master of Business Administration in Management & Strategy from Western Governors University. He also holds CPA licensure in Texas and Oregon.
